Convert HEIC to JPEG on Mac Easily

In this guide, I will show you how to easily convert HEIC images to jpeg on Mac. This uses the Convert Image utility that comes with the computer. Typically I need to do this when I airdrop a photo from my iPhone and then want to upload it to a place that does not accept the .HEIC image format. This blog is a perfect example of needing to use this.

What is HEIC picture file?

HEIC or High Efficiency Image Container is a format used on iPhones and iPads to take high-quality images saved in a smaller file size. Compared to the previous jpeg standard, this format is an updated version of the High Efficiency Image Format (HEIF) that was also used on iPhones and iPads.

Converting HEIC Images to JPEG

To start we need to find the image or images that you would like to convert. In my case, I will be converting IMG_0483.HEIC that is located on my desktop as seen in the image below. This happens to be for another article that I am writing.

HEIC Image File

Next, we will right-click on the file. When the menu pops up select Quick Actions > Convert Image.

Mac Right Click - Quick Actions - Convert Image

This will bring up the conversion options. For Format, we will select JPEG. For the Image Size, I chose to do the Actual Size to preserve as much quality as possible. The output quality is up to you. Once you are happy with the settings click the Convert to JPEG option in the bottom right.

As a result, once the conversion is finished you will see the .jpeg version show up in the same folder location as the original file. You can see mine located next to the original on my desktop. Now you are able to use your .jpeg file for whatever your intention is!
