In this guide I will show you how to change what closing the lid does on your Windows 10 laptop PC. For some you may want your laptop to go to sleep, for others you might want to keep it running. As you’ll see below changing the setting is very easy. Let’s get into it.
First you click on the start button and search for change what closing the lid does
, when you see this option show up, click on it to open the panel.

Once you’re in the panel you’ll be able to go to the power and sleep buttons and lid settings
options. It is broken down to when the computer is on battery or when it is plugged in. Being able to change the setting for both of these separately is very helpful.
My personal preference when on battery is to have the computer sleep when I close the lid. This is really to help preserve the laptop battery. To do this I went to the On battery
column, then used the dropdown for When I close the lid:
and set it to sleep
.

My personal preference when plugged in is to have the computer stay on when I close the lid. Most of the time when I plug the computer in and leave it, I have the computer working on some long running process. At night it is nice to keep the computer running without the monitor shining in your face. To do this I went to the Plugged in
column, then used the dropdown for When I close the lid:
and set it to Do nothing
.

Once you are finished making your changes, you will need to to click the Save changes
button in the bottom right corner of the panel.

As you can see it was easy to change what closing the lid does on Windows 10. What is your preference? Drop a comment below to get the conversation started!
